Tips to Assertively handle your Anger –
1. Take Responsibility & Power. Accept that anger is a choice of When, How, and if to express it or not.
2. Make a commitment to avoid using ANGER to control, intimidate or punish others.
3. Use Non-Judgemental Statements like – “I feel Angry when you don’t call to let me know you will be late, because then I can’t plan my evening”. This helps you to express your anger towards your partner in a healthy way.
4. Do not vent your Anger or accuse others. Avoid “YOU” statements. E.g. Avoid using ‘YOU statements such as “You always…..” or “You never….” Etc.,
5. Focus on the “Here & Now” (Current issues at hand). Avoid bringing up the past. Agree to Disagree on the past and then bring the discussion back to the present issue.
Anger is Healthy unless and until it doesn’t bother yourself or your loved ones. The onset of Anger in sudden bouts may even be a reflection of Child Abuse, Neglect, Depression, Grief, Low self worth, Fear, Guilt Etc. It may even be linked with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
